Professor Alan Flisher
It was with immense sadness that we heard
of the death from leukaemia of Professor Alan Flisher, South Africa’s
foremost academic child and adolescent psychiatrist. He was Head of the
Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry of the Red Cross War
Memorial Children’s Hospital, and held the Sue Struengmann Chair of
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Cape Town. A truly
rare and gifted person, he qualified both as a clinical psychologist and
as a child and adolescent psychiatrist. He was a loyal member of SASOP
all his professional life, and served frequently on Society committees
and advisory bodies. On the larger stage, Alan has been a beacon for
African child and adolescent mental health for many years, and the depth
of our loss is revealed by the condolences pouring in from all corners
of our continent, where Alan has for many years been teaching and
training, as well as from further afield, for Alan was also an
internationally respected researcher. He was still a young man, as
academics go, and he should have been able to look forward to many more
years of dedicated service to his discipline and to the children of the
developing world. Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to his family,
especially his wife and children, and to the many friends and colleagues
who also loved him. This is a deeply tragic loss for us all.
