SATURDAY 16 OCT  Neurology Skills for Psychiatrists 
Convenor(s) Prof Dali Magazi - Head of Dept of Neurology, MEDUNSA. Prof Magazi's special interests include the fields of epilepsy, HIV and neuromuscular conditions.
Guest speaker(s) Dr Pierre van der Merwe -Dually qualified neurologist and neuropsychiatrist.. Dr Van der Merwe has special interests in the dementias, sleep disorders, stroke and psychiatry as related to medical conditions.
Description The goals of the workshop are to (1) assist general psychiatrists and registrars to improve their skills in neuropsychiatric assessment and (2) improve knowledge on general neurological illnesses with psychiatric manifestations, their clinical signs/symptoms, basic neuropathology, and helpful neuroimaging techniques. The structured approach of the workshop is intended to provide maximum educational benefit within the scheduled 2 hours.

    Convenor(s)  Dr Mike Ewart-Smith - Psychiatrist with special interest & expertise in assessment of psychiatric disability; Honorary Consultant, Department of Psychiatry, WITS 
    Description  Most psychiatrists are under pressure to declare a growing number of patients disabled on psychiatric grounds. The subject is poorly dealt with in undergraduate and postgraduate training and in psychiatric textbooks. The workshop is aimed at providing an update on how best to cope with this difficult and often controversial area of clinical practice. There will be workshop discussions of cases illustrating potential problems faced by psychiatrists in managing disability claims.

  • The role of the treating doctor in the disability process, including clinical, professional and ethical issues in the granting of off-work certificates and the provision of psychiatric reports.

  • Relationship between common psychiatric disorders and work disability.

  • The role of a perceived noxious work environment in preventing treatment response and return to function.

  • Improving quality of life and functioning in patients with major psychiatric disorder.

    Convenor(s)  Convenor - Dr Leandre Gauche: Psychiatrist in private practice in Port Elizabeth; many years of experience as administrator at Weskoppies Hospital, last as CEO. 
    Guest speaker(s)  Prof Melvyn Freeman: Clinical Psychologist; Director, National Department of Health; has been instrumental in the creation of the Act
    Prof Rita Thom: Psychiatrist
    Prof Yusuf Moosa: Principal Psychiatrist; Director of the Mental Health Directorate in the Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development; intensely involved in academic work at Wits University and in research, with numerous publications in international and local journals; member of the editorial board of the SAJP and reviewer of international journals.

    A representative from the Western Cape Mental Health Review Board: still to be nominated by Dr Tom Sutcliffe.
    Description  The workshop will look critically at the Act in its entirety critically from various angles. The historical/philosophical background of the Act will be explained, difficulties with the implementation of the Act will be highlighted, and various work groups are planned to discuss possible changes in the forms, the regulations, and the Act itself. From this a standing task team within SASOP should emanate.
