PSYCHOTHERAPY BY MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS OTHER THAN PSYCHIATRISTS (GENERAL PRACTITIONER AND OTHER SPECIALISTS)

The South African Society of Psychiatrists (SASOP) supports the treatment of psychiatric disorders by qualified Medical Practitioners. SASOP wants to assist Medical Practitioners, Medical Schemes, Administrators and Managed Health care Organisation to approve benefits for consultations, psychotherapy and medication for the treatment of patients with psychiatric disorders.

Medical Practitioners (other than psychiatrists) do not have adequate training in psychotherapy as this does not form part of undergraduate medical training. Competency in psychotherapy for medical practitioners is thus always attained through formal post graduate education and training.

The South African Society of Psychiatrists (SASOP) is assisting Medical Practitioners, Medical Schemes, Administrators and Managed Healthcare Organisations in accrediting Medical Practitioners (GP's and Specialists (other than Psychiatrists)) for competency in psychotherapy. The criteria by which SASOP assesses competency are as follows:
  1. Training in psychopathology including psychology and psychiatry.
  2. The psychopathology and psychotherapy training the person received has been with a recognised institution, i.e. university, or professional body with proof of the qualification, or proof of attendance or time spent with the institution.
  3. The qualification alone does not ensure accreditation as the psychopathology knowledge and psychotherapy skill should be broad based and training should include most psychiatric disorders and mainstream psychotherapies. Training in one or two modalities of psychotherapy is seen as specialisation which must be from a broad base and not as a stand alone qualification.
  4. The person should have received adequate direct and indirect supervision in all of the psychotherapies trained by a qualified psychotherapist with proof of supervision.
  5. The person must still be supervised as with psychiatrists (and psychologists) on an ongoing basis with proof of the supervision.
  6. The person should have attended continued educational lectures and workshops in psychotherapy (recognised by relevant professional bodies) on a continued basis and be considered “up to date”.
  7. Supporting motivation of supervisor, colleague or peer.
SASOP requires the applicant to submit documents of the above to assist in the process of accreditation.

Documents must be submitted to: The South African Society of Psychiatrists (SASOP); sasop@global.co.za or webmaster@global.c.o.za.
