Invitation from the Convenor

Dear colleagues,

Our 17th Biennial National SASOP Congress has been scheduled for 7 to 11 September 2012 in Muldersdrift, Johannesburg, with the theme: “Pride, prejudice and promise – from origins to outcomes”. To account for the range of interests of the different currently constituted SASOP Interest Groups, the congress has been structured in terms of four tracks to accommodate these implied “bio”, “psycho”, “social” and “spiritual” dimensions.

Muldersdrift, in the days gone by of transport driving with ox wagons and the like, used to be the stop-over place for regrouping and replenishment on the way to the next destination. Misty Hills Country Hotel was chosen as the venue, also for its close proximity to the local world heritage site, the “Cradle of humankind”, which were established around sites like the Sterkfontein caves, where many of the important local palaeo-anthropological discoveries were made.

Several distinguished international speakers have already confirmed their participation in our meeting. On behalf of the South African Society of Psychiatrists and the Organizing Committee of the local SASOP Southern Gauteng Subgroup, I want to cordially invite you to also join us at this meeting to consider even our distant past and the more recent roads that we have travelled, to deliberate on our current achievements and challenges, and to map out our preferred vehicles and future outcomes for psychiatry in this part of the African subcontinent.

SASOP 60 2012: 60th ANNIVERSARY South African Society of Psychiatrists 1952-2012

In 2012 the South African Society of Psychiatrists celebrates its 60th anniversary. We will be commemorating this through the course of the year, but with a special focus during the 17th National Congress in September. We welcome the opportunity to engage with all those connected to SASOP, to reflect on the past, consider the present and plan for the future.
