Psychiatry as a Profession

 

Psychiatry as a clinical speciality area is the medical study, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illness. A mental illness is a syndrome of clinically significant behavioural or psychological symptoms that presents with distress or disability or a significant risk of suffering pain, death or an important loss of freedom. These disorders are currently classified to include clinical syndromes such as cognitive disorders, substance-related disorders, neuropsychiatric aspects of a range of medical disorders, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and sleep, eating and sexuality/sexual disorders.
